The IEC warns that a single systems breakdown means it may not be able to supply the demand. Israel is suffering from a heat wave this week. Temperatures in the country's center peaked at 42 degrees on Tuesday afternoon, the utility said. The prior peak demand was 9,450 MW during a cold snap in December 2006. Last summer demand rose as high as 9,400 MW as the People of the Book turned on air conditioners en masse. But as the summer wears on, the IEC is anticipating that demand will exceed 10,000 MW.

The sharp rise in temperature has led to a sharp increase in the consumption of power in the Capital.
